Hair Loss in Men

Let’s talk about that dreaded stage of aging for men and that is hair loss.  It causes no minor amount of anxiety among most men.  Losing your hair, sometimes at an early stage of the game can be mind blowing.  It causes a great deal of panic and a desperate search for hair restoration, hair loss treatments, hair transplant information.  Male patterned baldness represents to men one of the most obvious signs of aging and it can’t be “covered up.”  Yes, you can try and find a wig, a hair piece, a ‘rug’ or whatever, but it never looks the same and everyone will be chuckling behind your back that, “he’s wearing a rug.” Snicker, snicker.

In many ways, especially in appearance, women have it much easier when it comes to aging.  The whole world caters to this market.  Women can get away with wearing wigs, clothing can hide a multitude of body problems, makeup can correct this and that, and the entire cosmetic industry has been totally geared to women’s needs.  It is only recently men have been able to buy anti aging skin care products and not feel totally embarrassed.  The ingredients are the same, but the packages have a masculine edge to them.  You don’t to buy anything frilly anymore.  But hair loss for men is a major anxiety for millions of men around the world.

Now if you have a well shaped skull, you can just shave it all off and go bald.  Many women find bald men attractive, so that’s the easiest solution.  Don’t whatever you do, let one side grow longer and comb it across your bald spots.  You’re not fooling anyone and this is definitely not the best anti aging advice to take.  Shave off the hair and look a little brutal.  Nothing wrong there.

If you are starting to notice your hair thinning, you can check with your doctor to see if there is anything you can do about the situation.  However, unless your doctor is up to date with the latest in medical research, or an anti aging specialist or an integrative endocrinologist, he might not be of much help.  There’s Rogaine for hair loss which is now available without prescription.  There is also Propecia (finasteride) as a partial remedy to the hair loss treatment for men.  Propecia is a once a day hair loss pill for men.  It helps to block the transformation of testosterone into dihydrotesterone (DHT).  DHT causes 95% of hair loss in men.  Problem with that is, if you block DHT too much, you could catch an aggressive type of cancer.  Balance is the key.

To clearly identify what is causing your hair loss, get a hormone blood test.  If you are approaching your mid-thirties, early forties, you could be experiencing estrogen dominance, a state whereby there is an excess of estrogen.  (Yes, excess estrogen does happen to men and comes with symptoms such as hair loss, breast enlargement, weight gain, irritability, bloating and headaches.  Luckily this can be corrected with healthy diet, regular exercise and bioidentical hormones.  Natural bio-identical progesterone will balance excess estrogen.  You can also use a natural estrogen/testosterone blocker indole-3-carbinol which you can find at a health store.

Better than Propecia and another natural solution for hair loss for men is to use the nutritional supplement zinc which is a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor.  Fatty acids in your diet will also help inhibit 5-alpha-reductase.  Work with a nutritionist to help you find the correct balance in your diet.  However, you shouldn’t take more than 100 milligrams of zinc because it can increase the risk of prostate cancer.  Including zinc and the right amount of fatty acids in your diet helps fight hair loss.

Other treatments available for mens hair loss include hair transplants and low level laser hair rejuvenation.  Both of these options are expensive.  Low level laser hair rejuvenation is a non surgical approach to treating hair loss and thinning hair. You sign up for a series of treatments which can last up to a year.  As always, I suggest you try the natural treatments for hair loss first.  Start using only organic hair products on your hair and avoid the chemicals.  Have your hormones checked and use the natural solutions first.  Work with your doctor and your nutritionist.
